What is lizflix?
I see a lot of movies. A lot of movies. I am married to a movie junkie and we watch a movie just about every night, all year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. And while I watch 5-7 movies a week, my husband watches more than that. We own close to 600 DVD’s and my husband has watched every bonus, commentary and extra feature on each and every one. That includes special boxed sets like “Lord of the Rings” which has something like 20 hours of extras. The man is obsessed.
Several years ago, my husband, Chris, started writing screenplays. Movie time became an analysis of three-act structure and character arcs. After that, he became a full-fledged movie director after which I was suddenly all too aware of camera angles and editing. My days of blissfully ignorant movie-viewing are behind me; now, every movie is a study of story, direction, casting and originality. Like it or not, I’m a tough cookie, hard to please and harder to surprise. I have seen so many films that I can see a plot twist coming a mile away.
That’s why I like small movies, foreign movies, independent movies. They are unpredictable and quirky. They will kill off their main character without any warning. And there are people out there making documentaries about almost everything. That’s why Chris & I watch so many films that fly under the radar. Many of them are just awful. Awful! But some of them are surprisingly good, original and offbeat. Here’s my take on a few of them. Plus a few oldies that you should have already seen. And, ok, an occasional big studio film, if it’s well done.
